Rare Men’s Longines Solid 14K Gold Diamond Watch with Knotted Lugs

Buy It Now Price: $1,250 (price as of 2016; item no longer available)

Pros:

-This vintage Longines wristwatch (a Viscount model) exudes bold 1940s retro styling. The slight, convex curve of the crystal watch face evokes the image of a porthole. The knotted lugs and attractive radial bezel design complete the subtle nautical theme convincingly.

-This Longines wristwatch is made from high quality materials – a solid 14 karat yellow gold case set with 12 diamonds around the bezel. In my opinion, this design faithfully encapsulates the prevailing style of the time without venturing into the garish.

-According to the item description, the watch is triple signed – on the dial, case and movement. A watch that is triple signed is more desirable than an identical watch with fewer or no signatures.

-The watch case measures 40 millimeters (1.57 inches) in length by 29 millimeters (1.14 inches) in width (including the lugs). While smaller than most modern men’s watches, this is a typical size for a mid-century men’s wristwatch.

Cons:

-There are no photos of the watch movement. Such photos would verify the caliber and prove it is not a dreaded “Franken-watch” – a vintage watch that has been reconstructed from inappropriate or non-period parts. They might also help corroborate the seller’s claim that the watch was recently serviced (and is therefore presumably in good working order).

-There are insufficient photos to verify that the watch is triple signed as indicated in the item description.

-The price is slightly high at $1,250. A much more equitable price would be $1,000 to $1,100.

-The Longines name does not have the same brand cachet in many collectors’ eyes as some other vintage watch manufacturers like Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre or IWC. Conversely, this tends to make vintage Longines watches less expensive. Don’t let the brand name stop you from considering this watch.

Blue Guatemalan Jadeite Jade Rough

Buy It Now Price: $60 (price as of 2016; item no longer available)

Pros:

-This is a beautiful block of jadeite jade from the Motagua River Valley in Guatemala. Jadeite jade is much rarer than its cousin, nephrite jade. Guatemala, along with Burma (Myanmar), is one of the few sources of jadeite jade in the world today.

-The bluish color of this specimen is both somewhat unusual and very attractive. It is also unheard of in nephrite jade. I believe that jadeite jade of this hue has more potential to appreciate in the future than other, more common colors of jadeite jade.

-This jade is almost certainly untreated and all-natural. It also has no visible fractures.

-There may be other pieces of jade out there that sell for less, but few – perhaps none – would be of this quality. The price of $60 per pound is well justified, if not a bargain.

Cons:

-The block is only moderate in size, measuring approximately 2.9 inches (7.4 cm) by 1.9 inches (4.8 cm) by 1.6 inches (4.1 cm) and weighing around 1 pound (454 grams).

-The jade was photographed wet, which is perfectly acceptable when properly disclosed – as it has been in this instance.

Designer Modernist 18K Yellow Gold Pink Tourmaline Pearl Dangle Earrings

Buy It Now Price: $995 (price as of 2016; item no longer available)

Pros:

-This pair of pearl dangle earrings is a very fine example of Modernist jewelry. They have a strong composition and interestingly textured gold.

-The earrings are heavy for their size, weighing 8.6 grams.

-The earrings use good quality materials: 18 karat gold, nice brilliant cut pink tourmalines and baroque pearls.

-The backs of the earrings are beautiful, showing that the jeweler took great care in casting them. This piece is probably one-of-a-kind.

-These earrings are hallmarked “18K” and signed by the designer. This is common on high quality Modernist jewelry.

Cons:

-The seller does not give measurements of the tourmalines or pearls. This makes it impossible to estimate their weights.

-These earrings are a bit on the pricey side at $995. The intrinsic value of the gold they contain is only around $225 (with gold trading at $1,100 an ounce). The intrinsic value for the tourmalines and pearls are difficult to calculate, but are probably rather low – I would guess no more than $50. I would be much more comfortable paying around $750 or maybe $800 for these exceptional earrings.

Sterling Silver, Gold Overlay & Jade Rooster Circa 1960!

Buy It Now Price: $225 (price as of 2016; item no longer available)

Pros:

-This is a fine objet d’art crafted from some very desirable materials.

-Its French attribution seems secure based on the subject matter. The rooster is an enduring symbol of the French Republic.

-The eBay seller mistakenly identifies the stone base as malachite, which is incorrect. In reality, the base is made out of good quality nephrite jade, which is actually more valuable than malachite.

-The tarnish on the item is not unusual for silver vermeil (gold over silver) and shouldn’t deter a purchase.

-The craftsmanship appears to be good, but not top tier. On the whole this piece is about as inexpensive as one could possibly hope for a quality objet d’art.

Cons:

-The eBay seller describes this piece as being gold over sterling silver, but the French rarely produced silver in the sterling (92.5% fine) standard. The overwhelming majority of French silver is either 1st standard (95% fine) or 2nd standard (80% fine).

-I also don’t see any hallmarks in the photos, although they might simply be too small or obscured to see properly. If there is any reason to reject the item, the lack of a hallmark is it. The seller may have more information regarding hallmarks on the item.

-The piece is on the small side at only 1.75 inches tall by 1.5 inches in diameter. This is forgivable given the reasonable price.
